Bloque i kubansk salsa og timba.

"Basically, this translates to "break" -- a short, syncopated rhythm pattern played by the percussionists in unison, sometimes accentuated by the bass, piano or horns. Traditional salsa tunes might have one or two of these to transition between sections, but Timba can have a dozen or more in a given arrangement. It's mind-bending for non-Cuban musicians to listen to the sheer number of complex bloques that are memorized by Timba musicians for each arrangement. It's almost as if the percussionists are playing a horn chart, but the music stands are nowhere to be seen! The secret, of course, is that these bands rehearse up to 6 times a week. Some, like Bamboleo, have numbered bloques which can be called out like basketball plays, so that in concert a given song will have different bloques from night to night. Timba increases the frequency of bloques, and the complexity of their rhythms (which are often derived from polyrhythmic Afro-Cuban folkloric music), but even more exciting is the placement of the bloques within the arrangement. Instead of reserving them for transitions, the bloques are frequently inserted after a section has begun. Just as the listen lets his or her guard down and settles down to listen to the coro and lead singer, an explosive bloque will erupt from out of nowhere."

Musician at the forefront of Cuban evolution

"Alberto Alberto a tireless ambassador of timba on the city's thriving Latin scene.
When Alberto Alberto sings "de Toronto soy" (I am from Toronto), he is referring to far more than a mailing address.
For the 36-year-old Cuban ex-pat, the city is all about artistic inspiration that has taken him far beyond the traditional music of his native country.
Since coming to Canada in 1999, the gregarious, energetic singer/composer/arranger has been a tireless ambassador of timba, the genre-crossing evolution of son that is very much the music of the times in Cuba.
Although there are only about 2,000 ex-pat Cubans in Toronto, their influence on the city's Latin music scene has been disproportionately large.
"In the last five years, there have been a lot of new Cuban arrivals, most of them of a very high professional quality," says Alberto. The positive cycle keeps feeding itself, attracting even more new talents.
That has only helped musicians like Alberto propagate the aggressively dance-friendly rhythms of timba, placing more importance on rhythm than salsa, which tips the scale toward melody.
The singer's first big Toronto project was cover band Quimica Perfecta (Perfect Chemistry). More recently, he has been working locally as Alberto Alberto y su Orquesta, which performs the bandleader's own creations.
"Now, timba has a community (in Toronto), thanks to what I do," says Alberto. "I've been pushing very, very hard."
They're putting on a show at Lula Lounge Saturday night. Much of the music is bound to come from the band's year-old album, Traigo de todo (I Bring it All), which includes Alberto's dance-fired ode to his adopted city and the proud refrain, "de Toronto soy."
For Alberto, the road from Cuba to Toronto leads in the other direction, too. "The bandleaders there keep inviting me to come play with them," he says, laughing.
Alberto toured the U.S. in 2006 with Cuban bandleader Maraca. He discovered that decades of severed relations with Cuba helped build up an almost insatiable thirst for new music among lovers of Latin styles.
"They want to see what's going on," says the musician. "They want timba."
He also discovered a yawning gap between advocates of timba and traditional salseros in big cities like Los Angeles and New York. "It's more of a division between communities" rather than a fight over musical tastes, Alberto observes.
One of the advantages of Toronto is such deep divisions don't exist.
Another notable absence in Toronto is Cuban politics. "One of the reasons I'm staying in Canada this winter is I don't want to have anything to do with politics," says Alberto. In this city, the musicians are all about music. "We don't even touch politics," he adds with evident satisfaction.
Alberto began singing at age 5, earned himself a prodigy's profile through national talent shows, and got his first gig with a major band when he was 17, thanks to Delio Cardoso and his Orquesta Pakason. Another star mentor early on was pianist Chucho Valdes.
Locally, Alberto boosted his profile as soon as he arrived in 1999 by gigging with jazz greats Jane Bunnett – the single biggest force in initiating the growth of Cuban music in Toronto – and Hilario Duran.
Alberto says he's devoting a lot of energy in coming months to creating tracks for a new album with Telmary, a Cuban singer/songwriter who is working out on the edges of that country's pop music scene.
Alberto and Telmary have performed and toured together in the last year. "Everybody loves Telmary," he says, hoping that her hip-hop sensibility and his passion for timba can translate into a mutual creative leap forward.
Best of all, it's happening here in Toronto."

Azucar Negra

Azucar Negra med tittellåta Exceso De Equipaje frå den nye plata Exceso De Equipaje.

Azucar Negra: Exceso De Equipaje CD & DVD

"Another heap of non-stop timba from one of the great second generation Cuban timba bands, one that keeps going, due in part to the nonpareil ear of the leader Leonel Limonta. Limonta cranks out unforgettable songs, and has a way with the cool coro; as a talent scout, he’s no slouch either, regularly picking singers that can rock the house. This is noisy, no-prisoners-accepted timba, working on a bunch of rhythmic levels, the coro floating tranquilly through the rhythmic mayhem of the percussion, the erratic movement of the bass, the pointillism of the horns and keyboards. The male singers are a bit hysterical, giving a sense of wildness to the songs on which they’re featured; Aylin Mulgas, the woman singer, is a bit more relaxed; they all bring it totally, and contribute to the first great timba album of the year, an album loaded with soon to be classic material. Comes with a DVD of live material."
Highly Recommended."

Klimax

Klimax med låta "Es Un Peligro" frå plata Nadie Se Parece A Ti.
Dei har nett gjeve ut ei ny plate Solo Tu Y Yo.

Klimax

Solo Tu Y Yo
Import CD (BIS 636), Released 2008.

"Piloto and his band have always been apart from the average timba band, in part because what he produces isn’t straight up timba, often mixing rhythms from around the Caribbean, and because his recording and production technique often sounds more modern and professional than the average Cuban recording. It sounds like he spends time outside of Cuba, which he does, and on Solo Tu Y Yo, he’s doing his traditional mixing of stuff. In case non-Cuban speaking people buy the album (something that’s been on his mind from early on), it comes with a Cuban-Spanish dictionary; the music’s the same, a salsa/timba/other stuff mix, all played perfectly. There’s some Latin pop schmaltz, per usual, but when this band starts moving down the road, get out of the way. Not only is Piloto a great writer, but his drumming is as good as it gets in the idiom, which is saying something. There’s the sense of musical heaviness you hear in great bands, whether it be the Coltrane Quartet or the Rolling Stones. Piloto’s invited a bunch of people to perform, from Omara Portuondo, Pablo Milanes, Tania Pantojo, Chucho Valdez and the goddess Haydee Milanes who’s pretty much brilliant on her track, offering a new set of melodies for improvisation. Dance music doesn’t get better than this, intelligent, driving, of a place, heroic.
Highly Recommended."

Issac Delgado på SOB i New York

Issac Delgado Y Su Grupo

Asi Soy
CD (Universal 178451), Released 2008;

"The second product of the great Cuban singer Issac Delgado’s stay in Miami has arrived in time for Christmas, and per usual with Delgado, it’s a masterpiece. Produced by Delgado and Sergio George and recorded in Puerto Rico with a cast of the best Puerto Rican musicians (Cano Estremera shows up on coro!), it’s a non-stop blast of pleasure. Delgado ventures on the tune "La Fiesta" into deep party music, mixing up some reggaeton with salsa; on title tune "Asi Soy," the percussion goes home-wrecking, the musicians are so excited (actually, the percussion, turned up and placed high in the mix is pretty much brilliant all album long; no fear of percussion in this mix). And while Delgado was there at the inception of timba, his music has long been a sophisticated blending of various Afro Caribbean musics, and Asi Soy is a straight up salsa record, hard and unrepentant, even if at times Delgado starts out his tunes with some near pop singing. It’s as if, on say a track like "No Vale La Pena," with its strong melody and coro, Delgado was putting himself in the same territory as Victor Manuelle and Gilberto Santa Rosa — when they’re singing uptempo swingers. And, per usual, the songwriting is exceptional, with great tunes taken from the book of Amaury Gutierrez, and Jorge Luis Piloto and Sergio George and Delgado himself. It has to be remembered that Delgado’s one of the great singers of the late 20th century, and the album is rife with melodies he’s improvising, asides that add melody on top of melody, that take just a song into something special, something worth remembering, looking forward too. There’s nothing like him, the texture of his voice, his ability to evoke emotion, his freedom, and if there’s any justice we’ll be hearing tracks from this on the radio for the next year. Otherwise, it’s just another historic recording that radio overlooks, again.
Highly Recommended."

Charanga Habanera in Copenhagen 22.11

Men kun næsten.

Flot flot.flot... Lad os få mere af det. Koncerten i Amager Bio viste at publikum er der."

Telmary Diaz

"Que equivoca'o" frå plata A diario.

"A Diario, the powerhouse debut release by Cuban singer-songwriter Telmary, is part of the new wave of Cuban pop music that defies categorization. Produced by Roberto Carcasses — who seems to be the eye of the storm of this Cuban musical revolution — and Yusa, A Diario often utilizes hip hop as a springboard to launch a barrage of fist-in-the-air vocal poetry and densely layered sounds that borrow from technology, nature and pop music. This is hip hop rock on such a totally fresh new level that it demands a new name — no hop, post hop, whatever. There are moments when timba tries to take control, as on "Que Equivoca'o." But Telmary is too strong to relinquish control. Her voice never raises, but maintains such authority that you just have to get out of her way.
This is one of the more interesting releases to come out of Cuba in years. Check out "Mr. God," sung in english, as the singer appeals "...But it's not fair, we are not a zero; we are walking in the same trip; Mister God, Mister Mad, Mister Rambo; Go go easy, not so fast... come to my, come to my flow." Damn, this is good stuff. There's too much to talk about here; listen to what she does with "Marilu," Van Van's early rock and roll hit. A Diaro features guests Descemer, Athanai, Kumar, Yusa and others. Whatever you think about Telmary, one thing is for sure. She's a contender — an artist whose time is now.
Very Highly Recommended."

Pupy Y Los Que Son Son

Cesar Pedroso "Pupy": Pupy El Buenagente

"There isn't anything like this in Afro-Latin music; it's totally distinct. It's as if Pupy, longtime pianist and composer with Los Van Van, took a chunk of that group and decided to make it something bigger. So the rhythm arrangements swing in an incredibly complicated way; he's arranging the rhythm of each tune, making his music instantly identifiable by its time and feel instead of its melody or harmony. And Pupy goes directly to the modal heart of the matter, the band charging into a big, big sound that, weirdly, reminds me of John Coltrane and his classic quartet.
The music is like some sort of parallel popular music world in Cuba; it isn't timba, or salsa, just something hard and intelligent. Like a movie director who uses the same actors in every picture, or the same ideas, giving form to his total work, Pupy uses his group to mine the same sort of melodies and rhythms-and his tumbaos don't sound like anybody else's, either. Listen to the descarga of "El Buenagente," or the opening to "Disco Azucar" to hear things that are only in Pupy's arsenal. And with the violins waving in the distance, there's a whiff of Van Van. With a drum kit, the music, in it's power, sounds completely modern.
So here's the most advanced art available from the world of Cuban popular music, wildly imaginative, and inventive. And let's not forget that it's popular, which gives all the intelligence and invention and push that make it vital.
Highly Recommended."

Tumbao Habana

Tumbao Habana med låta Amanezco.

In December 2007 Tumbao Habana celebrated their 10th anniversary. The group was founded in 1997 by director and keyboardist Pascualito Cabrejas. During that time they have earned themselves a place in the Havana timba scene with weekly concerts at the EGREM venues.

Pascualito has a facility for finding new talent, and Tumbao Habana has given many young musicians and singers their first taste of the Casa de la Música circuit as well as foreign tours, such as their regular trips to Peru. The band consists of piano, keyboard, bass, timbal with kick drum, congas, güiro and a very diverse horn section featuring two trumpets, trombone and sax. The front line has three singers, although in concert Pascualito occasionally leaves the keyboard to join on coro.

Tumbao Habana has released two studio CDs, Tumbao Habana (2000) and Ese Huevo Quiere Sal (2002), and they plan to record another in 2008. Their studio CDs are a mix of styles including timba, salsa, reggae-salsa, orchestrated rumba,
mambo-rap and covers of traditional Cuban songs.

Azucar Negra- A mal tiempo, buena cara

Azucar Negra med låta A mal tiempo, buena cara frå plata Toque Natural.

Azucar Negra: Toque Natural

"Out comes the new Azucar Negra, led by the great Cuban composer and bandleader, Leonel Limonta, featuring a killing new woman singer Aylin Dalleras. The band hasn’t released an album in a couple of years, and here’s the real deal, hard timba dance music formed by all night dance shows, with the recording a studio version, shortened a bit, of what happens live. Just check out the first tune, "Toque Natural," which spends nearly 5 minutes — and ends 10 minutes to early — working through a maze of structural changes, rhythms that move around, riffs, breakdowns, coros, with Dalleras’s voice blowing like a trumpet over it all. Then the next tune, "El Picaron," with another great singer Lester Ciarreta, stepping through the thick coros, ventures into rap towards the end, with a wicked rhythm section churning up a storm. And if anybody wondered about Limonta’s songwriting skill, check out the third track, "La Palabra," featuring Dalleras, which opens with a long discussion about a word that’s only identified, finally, in the coro, dragging a listener/dancer into the music. The fantastic piano breaks, help, too, and her almost desperate improvisations — listen to her sing “Mi vida…” — for some beauty. Anyway, here it is, modern Cuban music, in all its precise glory.
Highly Recommended."

And, although Mr. Alvarez' sound is modern and vital, he hasn't jumped to the timba bandwagon: these highly danceable arrangements are firmly rooted in the salsa/son tradition — a tradition Alvarez embraced with Son 14. And, boy, can he swing. The cover track, "Mi Linda Cubana," is currently a worldwide Top-10 DJ pick — and deservedly so. But, for the most part, every track here has been tailored for the dancer. Alvarez even reinterprets his own mega-hit "¿Y Qué Tú Quieres Que Te Den?" With a Lucumí intro by Zenaida Armenteros, this 11-1/2 minute track plows through a short rap break and then, like an out of control locomotive, blisters onward for pure salsa bliss sung with a clarity and authority by Joaquin Moré Machado. It's the crown of the production. With arrangements by Roberto Linares, Joaquin Betancourt, and Adalberto Alvarez, this one, folks, is...
Very Highly Recommended."

Timba Night 1. april

Israel Cachao Lopez 1918- 2008

Israel Lopez died on the morning of March 22, 2008 in Coral Gables, Florida at the age of 89. He died from complications resulting from kidney failure.

"Israel "Cachao" López (September 14, 1918 – March 22, 2008), often known just as "Cachao" was a Cuban mambo musician, bassist and composer, who has helped bring mambo music to popularity in the United States of America in the early 1950s. He was born in Havana, Cuba. He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and has been described as "the inventor of the mambo". He is considered a master of descarga (Latin jam sessions).
Cachao was, in his last years, the most important living figure in Cuban music, on or off the island. And according to Cuban-music historian Ned Sublette he was arguably the most important bassist in twentieth-century popular music, innovating not only Cuban music but also influencing the now familiar bass lines of American R&B, ``which have become such a part of the environment that we don't even think where they came from.
López played the acoustic bass with his late brother, multi-instrumentalist Orestes López. The brothers composed literally thousands of songs together and were heavily influential on Cuban music from the 1930s to the 1950s. They introduced the nuevo ritmo ("new rhythm") in the late 1930s, which transformed the danzón by introducing African rhythms into Cuban music, which led to mambo.
A possibly more important move took place in 1957, when Cachao gathered a group of musicians in the early hours of the morning, pumped from playing gigs at Havana's popular nightclubs, to jam in front of the mikes of a recording studio. The resulting descargas, known to music aficionados worldwide as Cuban jam sessions, revolutionized Afro-Cuban popular music. Under Cachao's direction, these masters improvised freely in the manner of jazz, but their vocabulary was Cuba's popular music. This was the model that wold make live performances of Afro-Cuban based genres, from salsa to Latin jazz, so incredibly hot.
In the early 1960's, according to the documentary-film "La Epoca,", expected in theaters in September 2008, Cachao was one of two of the most in-demand bassists in New York City - the other being Alfonso "El Panameno" Joseph, who was the bassist of legendary Cuban tres player Arsenio Rodriguez for 8 years until Arsenio's death in December 1970. Joseph and Lopez substituted for each other over a span of 5 years, performing at New York City clubs and venues such as the Palladium Ballroom, The Roseland, The Birdland, Havana San Juan, and Havana Madrid. Mentioned in the film, La Epoca, while Cachao was performing with Machito's orchestra in New York, Alfonso was recording and performing with Cuban conga player Candido Camero. When Alfonso left Candido's band to work with Charlie Rodriguez and Johnny Pacheco, it was Cachao who took his place in Candido's band. Cachao was recently scheduled to be interviewed by Executive Producer Josue Joseph of the film in New Haven, CT where Cachao and Palladium-era dancer Cuban Pete were scheduled to perform at Yale University. The film is about the evolution of Latin music and dance during the Palladium-era to present day, and Cachao was scheduled to discuss his contribution of the mambo rhythm, which he derived from Arsenio Rodriguez, documented in the film.
This majestic influence came from a man of sweet demeanor and unassailable sense of humor. Fronting his band at a fancy dance in Coral Gables when he was already in his late 80s, he seemed so frail he had to lean his whole body on the contrabass to keep from falling. But a look at his beatific smile proved that he was in heaven already, embracing his instrument like a lover, like a strong friend.
A marvel of the 20th century, Cachao was born into a family of musicians, many of them bassists -- around 40 and counting in his extended family.
As an 8-year-old bongo player, he joined a children's septet that included a future famous singer and bandleader, Roberto Faz. A year later, already on bass, he provided music for silent movies in his neighborhood theater, in the company of a pianist who would become a true superstar, the great cabaret performer Ignacio Villa, known as Bola de Nieve.
His parents made sure he was classically trained, first at home and then at a conservatory. In his early teens he was already playing contrabass with the Orquesta Filarmónica de La Habana, under the baton of guest conductors like Herbert von Karajan, Igor Stravinsky and Heitor Villa-Lobos.
For a while, he had two distinct musical personae. In the New York salsa scene he was revered as a music god, with homage concerts dedicated to him, and records of his music produced by Cuban-music collector René López. In Miami, he was an ordinary working musician who would play quinceañeras and weddings, or back dance bands in the notorious Latin nightclubs of the Miami Vice era.
It took a celebrity, Miami's own Andy García, to integrate his musical personality into one: that of a legendary master. In the '90s, García produced the recordings known as Master Sessions and big concerts honoring his legacy. Since then, Cachao became again a household word among Cubans and his reputation continued to grow.
Lopez has won several Grammy Awards for both his own work and his contributions on albums by Latin music stars, including Gloria Estefan. In 1995, he won a Grammy for Master Sessions Volume 1. In 2003, he won a Latin Grammy for Best Traditional Tropical Latin Album together with Bebo and Patato Valdés for El Arte Del Sabor.
Lopez won a further Grammy in 2005, again for his own work, ¡Ahora Si!.
His nephew, Orlando "Cachaíto" López became one of the mainstays of the famed Buena Vista Social Club group.
Cachao has played with artists such as Celia Cruz, Bebo Valdes, Tito Puente, Willy Chirino, Paquito D'Rivera, Willie Colon, and his music has been featured on movies such as The Birdcage, and on the Grand Theft Auto: Vice City soundtrack. Actor Andy Garcia produced a documentary entitled Cachao ... Como Su Ritmo No Hay Dos ("With A Rhythm Like No Other") in 1993 about his music."

Klimax

Giraldo Piloto og Klimax med Es Un Peligro frå plata Nadie Se Parece A Ti.

Klimax: Nadie Se Parece A Ti

"There's funny stuff all over this record; it's dripping street. Check out the last few seconds of "La Rompeamor de La Habana," a tune about a girl that breaks up marriages. And the first tune, "La Chica Perfecta," is worth the price of admission, a flat out timba rocker that moves into a long groove section, then into breaks. Recorded in the Canary islands, the music sounds modern, with a bass that grinds more than even the regular timba style. As usual, Piloto breaks up the rhythms, moving into shuffles that sound pan-Caribbean through timba and onto to cumbias. One tune opens with a synth-accordion that sends a friendly commercial wave to Colombia; it doesn't take long for the breaks to take over, turning the cumbia into a timba-fueled roar. This is the shiznitz, top grade Cuban dance music with an eye to the outside world.
Highly Recommended."

Charanga Forever

Charanga Forever fremfører Dicen Que Amor frå plata Somos Charangueros.

Somos Charangueros

"Wow, get lost in the pleasures of timba, pure and simple. The real deal returns after a long time off; there hasn’t been anything this deep coming out of the timba world of Cuba in a long, long time. The shouted, rapped coros are there, telling their stories of the street, always with humor and cynicism. The band’s a huge machine, with slapping percussion driving on the ever-erratic bass figures, the constant montunos and the horn section. This is the musical glory of the '80s in Cuba, increasingly rare and valuable. There’s nothing like this, some of the last great live dance music in the world, orchestral, precise, intelligent. Michel Maza shows up as a lead singer on three tracks, and Tirso Duarte, the great pianist, shows up singing on one track. This stuff is overwhelming; it’s so detailed, so complicated. And so hard; listen to the first few bars after the break on "Se Cree Que se Las Sabe Todas," with a bluesy montuno thrusting through the music, to hear the intensity of hard driving swing. Highly Recommended."

Charanga Habanera

Charanga Habanera med låta Me Palpita frå ein konsert i Italia.

David Calzado Y Su Charanga Habanera: El Rey De Los Charangueros

"The album, recorded for an Italian label, starts out with the tough "El Rey," rattles with all the energy of the great Cuban band’s highly specific sound, its timba brand. Part of the group’s individuality comes from the boy band aspect of its sound, with a bunch of young voices taking the lead vocals. As usual, the miracle of their arrangements, the stuttering rhythm section dropping accents in the least predictable places, is completely in order. And on El Rey De Los Charangueros, the recording captures some of the band’s wall-of-sound, the baseball bat to the forehead quality of the band. The unity of the sound (with the exception of the voices, which are way up in the mix) relegates all the instruments to the same importance; at times it’ll almost seem as if there are two bands and two ideas competing on each track, one, the band itself, hard, unstoppable, and two, the singers. Anyway, another slice of genius, hard, hard timba dance music from Havana; this might actually be the band’s best recording. Nothing like it; it’s historical.
Highly Recommended."

Issac Delgado

Her er Issac Delgado frå Latin Grammy Street Party 2007 med låta Medley frå plata En Primera Plana.

Issac Delgado Y Su Grupo: En Primera Plana

"Delgado, one of the Caribbean’s great singers, one of the great singers of the 20th century, the Frank Sinatra of salsa and leader of one of the great bands of his time, has moved to Florida, and the first thing he’s done is record a classic salsa album that if all is well in the world, will give him a great career here for the rest of his natural life. Because there’s nothing like his singing, his sense of swing, his rhythmic assuredness, his melodic invention; it’s all so casual, laden with sensuality. The first track has Delgado singing with Victor Manuelle, and it’s a track that could go on for twenty minutes, their trading is so inspired. Delgado and Sergio George produced the record, with help from Alain Pérez, the bassist and arranger who was so integral to the success of what’s considered one of the great timba bands of all time, Delgado’s band from ’97.
But this music isn’t timba, it’s salsa with great coros, perfect tempos, and a pile of great singing from Delgado; I’d argue that En Primera Plana is his best album yet. And there are guests, including Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Giovanni Hidalgo, the rapper Fragancia and Cachao. Luis Quintero handles much of the percussion, and Pérez plays the bass on most tracks; it’s all touched by dance music perfection. Check out the breaks on "Sone/La Campana", with break after break, and thick, full coros rocking the place. Or the mambo on "Vengo Veneoso", which breaks into a rumba, Delgado’s voice shifting subtly, moving into the environment of the rumba for a second or two. There’s even a tres on a track or two (one track’s a changui); on Paquito Va, the piece explodes in the glories of a huge coro and the same sized horn section, working over George’s specialty the caballo rhythm.
Delgado could have gone in 14 different directions for this new album. He easily could have made a pop album, or a folk-ish album for the Anglo NPR market, or pandered to the reggaeton market. Instead he’s made a hard salsa album, an album for Latin audiences, one aimed at the radio, with an immense honesty, plus a bunch of dignity. And let me tell you, the proof of the music’s power is simple: I reach for the music whenever I want to hear something. It’s in the cd player all the time, all day and all night.
Highly Recommended, a major work by a major figure."

Paulito FG y su Elite

Paulito FG y su Elite i eit konsertopptak frå Havanna med låta Que Mania frå plata Te Deseo Suerte.

Paulito FG: Te Deseo Suerte

"Timba, especially professional timba, is such a rare commodity these days, it's almost shocking to hear it. Along comes Paulito with a new record, the first in a long time-pointing out the problems of recording music of a certain quality in Cuba-and when it gets going it's very, very good. It's slick, and well thought-out and the musicianship is extraordinary, with the bassist giving a class on how to play the modern bass in Afro Cuban music. As usual, Paulito's voice is as good as anything in Cuban music, thin perhaps, but agile, floating at times, then zapping some rhythms with the assuredness of a bomb going off. He's also instantly identifiable; it's not just his ability, but also his personality that comes through in his singing; it puts him in the top level of singers singing in Spanish. “Te Deseo Suerte” has plenty of soft moments, with lots of acoustic guitar sprinkled over the music as if it needed to be made pleasant for the pop market. It's too bad, but the schlock is well worth ignoring to find out what one of Cuba's best singers and thinkers has been up to recently. Highly Recommended.

Fresquecito

"Ah, the real deal that makes everything else pale. Here’s one of Cuba’s long standing bands, and one of the better bands in that country, a band that will come to your hometown and scramble the minds of your better musicians. It is, as some have said about some American music, ragged but right. If one is looking for what’s slick or smooth, go elsewhere. This stuff is non-stop intense, slightly maniacal, with endless rhythm arrangements, coro after coro, breakdowns, everything stacked on everything, just a riot of bandleading and crowd riling. Can’t help but loving it, and if there are any complaints about the typically average Cuban recording quality, turn this up, just like it deserves. This is history.
Highly Recommended."
