Israel Cachao Lopez

"Israel "Cachao" López (born 1918 in Havana, Cuba), often known just as "Cachao" (pronounced kah-CHOW) is a Cuban mambo musician and composer, who has helped bring mambo music to popularity in the United States of America in the early 1950s. He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and has been described as "the inventor of the mambo". He is considered a master of descarga (Latin jam sessions).
López played the acoustic bass with his late brother, multi-instrumentalist Orestes López. The brothers composed literally thousands of songs together and were heavily influential on Cuban music from the 1930s to the 1950s. They introduced the ritmo nuevo ("new rhythm") in the late 1930s, which transformed the danzón by introducing African rhythms into Cuban music, which led to mambo.
Lopez has won several Grammy Awards for both his own work and his contributions on albums by Latin music stars, including Gloria Estefan. In 1995, he won a Grammy for Master Sessions Volume 1. In 2003, he won a Latin Grammy for Best Traditional Tropical Latin Album together with Bebo and Patato Valdés for El Arte Del Sabor.
Lopez won a further Grammy in 2005, again for his own work, ¡Ahora Si!.
His nephew, Orlando "Cachaíto" López became one of the mainstays of the famed Buena Vista Social Club group.
Cachao has played with artists such as Tito Puente, and his music has been featured on movies such as The Birdcage, and on the Grand Theft Auto: Vice City soundtrack. Actor Andy Garcia produced a documentary entitled Cachao ... Como Su Ritmo No Hay Dos ("With A Rhythm Like No Other") in 1993 about his music."

"Maravilla de Florida has proved an extraordinary breeding ground for contemporary Cuban music. Alumni include Pupy's Pepito and Charanga Habanera's Leonid, but the most prolific is Manolito, who, when he left the band to form Trabuco, also took half of Maravilla with him, including conguero Lelo, bajista Mora, flautista David Bencomo, tecladista Osiris (now with Pupy), violinist Nicolas and cellist Orestes. The group must have had to rebuild itself from the ground up when Trabuco was formed. But rebuild they did: since then they have released only four albums - Vieja, pero se mantiene, Levantate y baile , 50 y más maravillas and this year's Luchando con fe released by Egrem. Well it's five if you count the early version of Luchando con fe recorded for Envidia in 2005 (on their web site - last updated in 05 - they refer to the Envidia album as Yo te doy la clave, after one of the album's more annoying songs, which happily doesn't make a reappearance on the new version). But this new version - rerecorded, with new songs and also some new musos, including a much less annoying singer - is a great improvement. In fact I've been thrashing it since I got back from Havana.
Manolito is listed as producer for this version; and other members of Trabuco (Bencomo, Miguelito) are listed as invitados. There are no indivdual credits however, so it's impossible to know whether it's Bencomo, or Maravilla's own Anais Casas Guerra who is responsible for the album's ripping flute solos.
The opening track features a rap in the intro, flagging the fact that this is no traditional charanga offering. Unfortunately it comes across as a bit try-hard - it's also completely unnecessary: the zestiness of the rest of the album - indeed the rest of the song - would have made that clear soon enough. Never mind. It's one flaw in an album that has very few indeed. And the song goes onto become one of the best in an album packed with great tunes.
La bola, which starts with a phat, squiggly synth riff, before the violins enter playing a percussive riff, is another.
As with a lot of timba, Maravilla take the energy level up and down and right back up again. It's infectious. A recogerse - played this year during the baseball broadcasts apparently - takes even more from timba with the traditional, almost lacklustre cuerpo, before opening up to fire on all cylinders with captivating coros and funky breakdowns.
I could have done without the ballad, Por estar contigo, but the rest of the album more than compensates."

Stylistic aspects

"Though quite similar to salsa on the surface of things, timba has certain qualities of its own which distinguish it from salsa, similar to the way American R&B is distinguished from soul. In general, timba is considered to be a highly aggressive type of music, with rhythm and "swing" taking precedence over melody and lyricism. Very little "traditional" salsa existed (or exists) in Cuba, the most influential foreign 'salsero' being Venezuelan Oscar d'León, who is one of the few salsa artists to have performed in Cuba. Timba musicians thus rightly claim a different musical heritage from salsa musicians.
At its most basic, timba is more flexible and innovative than salsa, and includes a more diverse range of styles, all of which could be defined as timba. The limits of what is timba and what is not are in fact quite fluid, as many consider timba to be any kind of popular Cuban dance music.
Timba incorporates many elements of Afro-Cuban culture and music. This includes rhythmic elements of Afro-Cuban music (on all instruments), expressions or parts of lyrics in ‘Lucumí’ (Cuban Yoruba, used almost exclusively in a religious context) and references to Afro-Cuban religion, the imperative for improvisation and interaction with audiences during concerts, story-telling in the lyrics, the quoting of melodies, rhythms and/or lyrics from other sources (similar to electronic or digital sampling in modern music), the frequent inclusion of "rap", and sustained sections of coro-pregon (call and response) interaction in songs. Contrary to (early) salsa, timba makes no claim to social or political messages, partly because of the political circumstances in Cuba.
More specifically, timba differs from salsa in orchestration and arrangement. Many timba artists readily concede that they have been more influenced by funk or soul than by salsa. Thus, bands like La Charanga Habanera or Bamboleo often have horns or other instruments playing short parts of tunes by Earth, Wind and Fire, Kool and the Gang or other US funk bands. In terms of instrumentation, the most important innovation has been the permanent incorporation of a kick drum and a synthesiser. Many timba bands have otherwise kept the traditional charanga ensemble of the 1940s, which includes double bass, conga, cowbell, clave, piano, violins, flute and in timba an expanded horn section that (in addition to the traditional trumpets and trombones) may include saxophones. However, many innovations were made in the style of playing and the arrangements, especially on the bass (with elements of funk and R&B), the piano (with elements of baroque music such as Bach), the horns (complex arrangements known as "champolas"), and the use of the clave (where 3-2 son clave is the standard in salsa music, timba often leans more towards 2-3 rumba clave). Also different from salsa is the frequent shift from major to minor keys (and vice versa), the highly complex rhythmic arrangements (often based on santería or abakuá rhythms), the shifts in speed and the large number of orchestrated breaks, or "bloques."

Vincenzo Perna som er amerikansk musikkvitar har skrive boka "Timba- the sound of the cuban crisis." Denne kan ein kjøpe på Amazon.

Rapport frå ruedakongress i Brighton

"BRIGHTON’S FIRST RUEDA CONGRESS, hosted by Cubashe Dance Promotions and SalsaNor had all us wheel geeks crying out for more Thursday 6th - Sunday 9th September 2007).
This was a no-brainer; right on the sea front, easily get at-able from London and the South East, days of intensive workshops and partying over what turned out to be one of the sunniest weekends this year.
The recipe was hot enough to pull in 200+ aficionados of the Cuban Wheel. Rueda-eros travelled from across the UK, Eire and as far afield as Scotland while the Congress also netted a 70-strong party of Norwegians.
As joint Congress hosts with Brighton's Cubashe Dance Promotions, Norwegian Salsa group SalsaNor landed in force, in party mood and with a good catch of their own Cuban, Latin and homegrown instructors.
To hook dancers, there were some juicy baits on offer, including a line up featuring some of the world’s best Cuban instructors; Rueda World Champion Osbanis Tejeda; Salsa Champion Rafael del Busto, UK Salsa Champion and Afro-Cuban dance expert Damarys Farres, Ariel Rios Roberts, Enrique Perez and Cubashe's own Leo Henriquez.

Making her UK debut at the Brighton Congress was Geldys Moralez. Originally from Havana Cuba, Geldys is one of Norway’s best-kept secrets, a quite exceptional talent and one salsa lovers need to see more of at international congresses.

La Rueda – or the Cuban Wheel – is Cuban-style circle dancing and started to roll in Havana in the 1950’s, growing out of traditional Cuban salsa. Usually, Rueda is carried out at break-neck speed by pairs of dancers in a circle, switching partners in response to moves called by a leader (cantante).
Mostly, calls are given in Spanish – for example, Dil que no, Enchufla, Sombrero - although some are in Spanglish - Un fly - others are international – Coca cola. Moves are carried out with the current dance partner and often, trigger a switch to the next partner in the circle.
One of big pluses of La Rueda is the blindingly obvious – people dance in a group.
“Because everybody dances together, Rueda is very sociable and friendly. A lot of the moves are quirky and cheeky and pure fun – this is the essence of Salsa. People can take LA style too seriously, whereas Rueda is down to earth and good fun,” Cubashe’s Claudine Baker explains.
Once you're hooked, there’s no turning back. There’s never enough time in weekly classes to get the hang of all the moves you want to know. It’s a bit like collecting cigarette cards, first you pick up the easy ones, getting loads of these time and time again and then you spend most of your time trying to get hold of the more difficult ones.
Over the weekend, I got into clandestine conversations with fellow dancers, promising to “trade” moves and there was definitely a cigarette card collector’s delight when one of the dancer’s got a move everybody else was finding difficult!
La Rueda seems to have sprung from nowhere on the UK Salsa scene. “A few years ago, there were hardly any Rueda classes on offer in clubs, now they’re everywhere,” says Claudine Baker.
There are good reasons for La Rueda’s growing popularity in the UK - and internationally. The Rueda crowd has got to be one of the friendliest on the dance circuit; it’s fun, there are dozens of moves to learn most of which are just as usable when dancing Cuban-style Salsa in couples and so plenty to interest all levels of ability.
By contrast, Salsa only arrived in Norway a decade ago but La Rueda caught on immediately. In 2002, the Norwegians held their first Rueda Congress. Currently, the Norwegians are developing their own Rueda standard, creating a
unified Norwegian-style Rueda, taught in all Norwegian Salsa clubs.
This contrasts sharply with UK practice where a range of Rueda styles are taught, including for instance, Street or Miami).
This means the same move could have different names or variations across different systems in the UK.
The Norwegian system has the clear advantage of eliminating a lot of confusion, especially for less experienced dancers.
To assist with instruction and learning, SalsaNor has created a very useful Rueda DVD, introducing the Norwegian Rueda standard - we’ll review this shortly.
Brighton Rueda Congress Hosts Cubashe's Leo Henriquez and Claudine Baker and SalsaNor's team led by Glen Lillehammer, Bjarte Langeland and Reidun Svabo pulled the event together in characteristically Norwegian and Cuban style.
The Norwegians were dead organised – Father Christmas even turned up at one of the evening parties – while the Cubans let it all hang out, leaving plenty of room for sabor and creative chaos, with the result that everybody enjoyed themselves.
The Brighton Rueda Congress ticks a lot of boxes and has real pulling power for us wheel geeks. Next year, I predict this event is going to be bigger and better. So many moves, so little time.... Ed."

"There isn't anything like this in Afro-Latin music; it's totally distinct. It's as if Pupy, longtime pianist and composer with Los Van Van, took a chunk of that group and decided to make it something bigger. So the rhythm arrangements swing in an incredibly complicated way; he's arranging the rhythm of each tune, making his music instantly identifiable by its time and feel instead of its melody or harmony. And Pupy goes directly to the modal heart of the matter, the band charging into a big, big sound that, weirdly, reminds me of John Coltrane and his classic quartet.
The music is like some sort of parallel popular music world in Cuba; it isn't timba, or salsa, just something hard and intelligent. Like a movie director who uses the same actors in every picture, or the same ideas, giving form to his total work, Pupy uses his group to mine the same sort of melodies and rhythms-and his tumbaos don't sound like anybody else's, either. Listen to the descarga of "El Buenagente," or the opening to "Disco Azucar" to hear things that are only in Pupy's arsenal. And with the violins waving in the distance, there's a whiff of Van Van. With a drum kit, the music, in it's power, sounds completely modern.
So here's the most advanced art available from the world of Cuban popular music, wildly imaginative, and inventive. And let's not forget that it's popular, which gives all the intelligence and invention and push that make it vital.
Highly recommended."

Maikel Blanco Y Su Salsamayor

" Smoldering live timba performance by Maikel Blanco y Su Salsa Mayor. Blanco, who composed all of the tunes here, is quickly becoming the major timba star in Cuba. I can´t think of many live timba performances on cd, so this is something of a rarity. 73 minutes of jam-packed timba fire. With " La Masa", " Cambia Tu Faceta", " Lo Bello Por Dentro" a whopping near 14 minutes worth, " Recoge Y Vete" and others. Highly recommended."

Pedro Pablo& La Rebambaramba

Her følger Peter Watrous i descarga si anmelding av plata:

" Ah, the sounds of timba, fresh and smart and urgent. Pedro Pablo, a bassist from Havana, has on his second album done what he did on his first, which is make either the best or one of the best timba albums of the year. And what Yo Soy La Noticia brings is the miracle of rhythm arrangements, arrangements worked out in front of dancers, and, though the title track fades too quickly, you can hear what the band does for dancers- roughing out stuttering rhythms and feints, and food for the dancers magination. Pablo´s put the piano upfront too, and the montunos lift the music up and give it a bright new sound; check out how the piano rocks the sound of of the tune "Christina". It´s amazing music, workaday dance music from the streets of havana, but in a 100 years, when the talent to play such profoundly complicated music has been lost, it´s true value will show up. Highly recommended."

Her er Peter Watrous i Descarga si anmelding:

" The album, recorded for an Italian label, starts out with the tough " El Rey", rattles with all the energy of the great Cuban
band´s highly specific sound, its timba brand. Part of group´s individuality comes from the boy band aspect of its sound, with a bunch of young voices taking the lead vocals. As usual, the miracle of their arrangements, the stuttering rhythm section dropping accents in the least predictable places, is completely in order. And on El Rey De Los Charangueros, the recording captures some of the bands wall-of-sound, the baseball bat to the forehead qality of the band. The unity of the sound( with the exeption of the voices, wich are way up in the mix) relegates all the instruments to the same importance; at times it´ll almost seem as if there are two bands and two ideas competing on each track, one, the band itself, hard, unstoppable, and two, the singers. Anyway, another slice of genius, hard, hard timba dance music from Havana, this might actually be the bands best recording. Nothing like it; its historical. Highly recommended."

Vive La France!
